Getting Smooth

I have been smooth for about 34 months now.  If there is one thing I have learned so far, being smooth is wonderful. Getting smooth is not always easy, nor is it painless. Shaving is relatively painless (not counting knicks), but it is time-consuming in that you really need to do it every other day to stay really smooth.  And it isn’t the most expensive of all methods, although those mach 3 razor blades do tend to set you back a bit.

Waxing is expensive, and painful.  No two ways about it - it is gonna hurt to yank all those hairs out. It doesn’t matter how you do it, you are still yanking hair out of your body. Professional waxing is probably the least painful because they can see what they are doing, and they know just how hard, and fast to yank. But, this is expensive.  For example, here in my town, it costs $40 dollars to do your legs, $60 if you add the bikini area. Waxing at home is possible, of course, and there are a lot of ways being sold out there.  Not cheap, and if you can stand to cause yourself pain, then go for it. Of course, you don’t have to do it everyday.  The salons say every 4 weeks I believe, but I really think 2 weeks would keep you smooth.

Depilatory creams work, and they are smelly, but they will last a few days.  Not terribly expensive, but you can’t use them everywhere... trust me.

What about epilators?  Well, as a survivor of the epilady... that sucker was a torture device in disguise. Talk about pain!!! I was leary to try the new breed of epilators, but was convinced to give it a go.  I really like the Braun Epil-Silk, for legs.  BB says it works good for arms, chest, back, but I can tell the pubic area just isn’t ready for this yet.

Here is an excerpt from an email I receive regularly, called “Looking Good.” I thought this was interesting, and had some pretty helpful info in it.

This wonderful, natural hair removal tip is from Dalia. Sometimes, the "old  country" ideas are the best..:-)

"Hi all!
I've been subscribed to ur newsletter for a few weeks now, and I found it very useful and even funny at times..I'm a 23yr old Neuroscience graduate student named Dalia :) I just  read your email regarding Nad's...I've seen the infomercial, but never cared to use it even when it was for sale @ the local K-Mart for $29.95.  I don't shave though b/c I have super sensitive skin and the few times I did it.. bleeding, rashes, ingrown hairs and the works:(  My mom uses a product that's completely natural, safe, and efficient..that she actually makes herself. It actually comes from ancient Egyptian culture, yeah my  ancestory is Egyptian and that's how I know about it.  It's a simple mix of  equal parts of water and sugar boiled together until carmeliazed and  with addition of a few drops of lemon juice.  The mix (called "Hallawa", meaning literally:sweets b/c it can be eaten too...and it tastes delicious..was my favorite treat as a child..and I was never overweight in  my life..just in case u r wondering!) My mom let it cool by pouring it into  a thin layer over the counter..then she workes it into a soft paste and uses it immediately or stores it in the freezer for later use.  The results..well, my mom is pearly white and completely hairless, and now that she has been using it b/4 I was born, her hair grows back very slowly and  very thinly...she now removes it from her legs about once every 4-6 months!! Since I'm a beginner at it, my hair grows back in about 6-8 weeks, depending on the area.  I tried everything b/4..from shaving to waxing and  Nair..ouch.  This one really works and is definitely less painful overtime than other methods.  A few tips though to make the process smoother, remove hair after u bathe..that makes the hair cells hydrated and softer,  thus easier to remove the hairs from them.  Make sure your skin is  completely dry..rub some baby powder onto the area of her removal to make  sure your skin surface is dry and the paste adheres easier to the hairs. Wash your skin with warm water, then cold to close off the
pores, then  rub some soothing cream in after you are done.  I've seen products on info- mercials that sound like this such as "sweet simplicity" (and of course  no credit given to the Egyptians!)  The first time of use is always the  tough one not b/c it hurts that much but b/c u anticipate it to be horrific..I'm the one with the super sensitive skin and trust me it's  the easiest, most natural and effective way of hair removal...and best of all  u don't have to buy or return anything!Bye for now,"  Dalia

Here are some really great tips from Jennifer, at TSF, who has been sugaring for awhile also.  Thanks for sharing this info Jennifer.

*The first time I sugarwaxed I had been shaving so I didn't go from a "full bush", I would say that if you were going from a full bush you should probably trim with a scissors first just to thin it out but don't clip it too tight, you need a bit of length for the wax to grip

*Wash your entire area and then use talcum powder to dry

*If the sugar comes in a plastic tub, just put in the microwave for a bit, check that it's not too hot, sometimes heating continues after it's out of the microwave so watch out

*I get my boyfriend to help me do the deed and I recommend it if you can get an assistant. It's not really a sexy erotic activity like shaving is but the result is much much better and you can have your sexy erotic activity later. One advantage of the assistant is they have a much better view of the lips etc than you do, also I find sometimes that I hesitate before the yank, fearful of the pain and sometimes that makes it worse as the least painful way is the short sharp shock

*Spread evenly and thinly, enough just for one cotton strip each time. You'll have to strike a balance between warm enough to be thin and cool enough to be comfortable but it should be ok, you can always put the tub back in the microwave

*Place the cotton strip over the sugar wax and smooth down, make sure that it really sticks to the wax and the wax has a good grip on your hairs

*Keep the skin taut and yank off quickly in the opposite direction of the hair growth, if you have an assistant, they will get a better grip and yank motion also they will be better for the "undercarriage" areas

*For the lips, what I would say is try and get a flat section and keep taut each time, it will be more successful than covering a large non flat area

*You'll probably go through all the strips, as you might have to go over areas again.

*Use a tweezers to pluck out any strays

*The first time you do it, it will hurt, but it gets easier, especially if you rewax as soon as the hairs grow back long enough for waxing, depending on your hair, it's likely to be between 3 and 5 weeks. But straight away after a session you will usually be "smarting" so it doesn't usually put you in the mood for sex, not for a few minutes anyway :-)

*One thing you might notice is sometimes one or two hairs might break off rather than pluck out, those will be noticeable after a few days, just use a tweezer on them

And here are some specifics, and a recipe:

The Ancient Egyptian art of hair removal was often referred to as  "sugaring". Although it is a bit tedious, it is effective and clean up is easy as the paste is water-soluble. It's hypoallergenic and ideal for  sensitive skin. Skin irritation  is reduced because the sugar paste adheres  only to the hair, not the skin. The method removes hair from below the  surface of the skin because the sugar wraps around the hairs and  pulls them out by the roots. Therefore, there's no stubble and regrowth is slow.

What you need to find out the secret of the Pharaoh:

1  cup honey or sugar
juice of 1 lemon or lime
plastic wrap

Making the mixture

If you're using sugar, squeeze the lemon or lime into a saucepan, bring it to a boil, then add sugar. If you are using honey, bring it to a boil first and then add the lemon or lime. Boil for 10 minutes over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it has an amber colour. Reduce  heat to low and let simmer for about 5 minutes, until thick. If the mixture gets too thick, thin with lemon or lime juice.  Remove the  mixture from the stove and place the saucepan in a sink filled with cold  water to speed up cooling. Rinse your fingers with cold water and grab enough  of the mixture to roll it into a palm-sized ball. Press the mixture into a  patty and lay it out on a sheet of plastic.

Using the  mixture

Dry your skin completely, sprinkling with baby powder if necessary to keep skin dry. Spread honey or sugar on to the skin and smooth into the direction of the hair growth. This allows the mixture to grip the hair. Roll the edge of the mixture between your fingers and remove the entire strip with a quick wrist-flicking action which pulls the hair out by the roots. As hair grows in many different directions, it may be necessary to repeat the same area pulling sugar/honey against the direction of hair growth. Because there's less pain, you can go over an area three or four times, removing shorter hairs without consequences. A slight reddening may occur, but is usually gone within an hour or so.

This tip is from “homer” at tsf- thanks a lot for your info.

The recipe is really simple. You pour a little Lemon juice in a pot and  add as much sugar as possible. Then you heat it without boiling the solution. After a while you get a syrup that thickens and normally becomes solid at room temperature. What you do is you let the mixture cool of until you can apply it without burning yourself. If it does not solify you need to heat it  again an add more sugar. you can always reuse the solution by heating it again. So you apply the solution and after it becomes solid, you can  pull out the patch. I've been applying lemon juice right afterwards whick seems to destroy the follices or at least prevents regrowth for a while. I'll  know in a few months. Preparing the area with a hot towel is supposed to  make the hair come out easier.

I hope you enjoyed this letter, and find the info useful.  I will continue to add to this section as I come across more helpful, and interesting tidbits.  Please send me any tips or suggestions you have to “get smooth.”
